OSOC Everest Base Camp Training Day in the Lake District
This trip took place on Saturday 31st October 2015, starting in Great Langdale and taking in the Crinkle Crags and Bow Fell before returning to Great Langdale. Participating walkers met at the start and finish point which is the Old Dungeon Mill Hotel (NY286062) in Great Langdale at 9.00 AM for a 9.30 AM start.
The route is as follows:
West from the hotel down the valley to Stool End Farm (NY276058) and cross Oxendale Beck.
Climb the path over Brown Howe (NY267047), and follow the upper reaches of Browney Gill to a path junction (NY 266041) near Red Tarn.
Follow path around Great Knott (NY260043) and on to the first Crinkle (249047) followed by the second Crinkle known as Long Top, (NY249048) These outcrops cannot be bypassed so short scrambles (using hands and feet) will be needed at these points.
Follow the clear path which bypasses the remaining third fourth and fifth Crinkles to reach The Three Tarns. (NY248060)
Ascend Bow Fell (NY245065) and return by the same route to Three Tarns.
Follow the path down The Band for a steady descent to Stool End Farm, and a return to the start point.
The guide books describe this as a "long rugged walk taking an exposed rocky ridge located high in a mountain setting," so adequate clothing and footwear will be needed to cope with this terrain, and the late autumn weather that may be encountered. Walkers should carry a personal first aid kit, map and compass/GPS and ideally a head torch or small torch.
